Sims 3 Review

I mentioned part of the reason I haven’t blogged much recently was because I was playing Sims 3. And I gave people a hard time for their reviews of the game so I might as well try to review it as best I can.

4.5/5 Stars: An excellent improvement of an already great game

There is very little to complain about when it comes to the Sims 3, but we can start with the negatives:

  • High requirements: I have a very basic computer and it runs the game kinda slowly…and ‘Create a Sim’ is very difficult to get through because the characters are black silhouettes. Certain floorings are also black limiting my choices somewhat.
  • Careers: I was very impressed by the improvement of capabilities at work with oppurtunities etc. but I wish there were more jobs, i.e. a career in education going to work at the school (a building already in place) I was dissapointed that you can’t fake sick like you could in Sims 2, it really hurts job preformance to miss a day of work.
  • $$$: After paying 50$ for a game I was very upset that I would have to pay for certain custom content. I understand that EA is just trying to make money but it would be easier to just put those objects in a stuff pack.

There is a lot of good in the Sims 3…well its kept me busy for about 19 days with about 3 all nighters.

  • Personalities: No more neat outgoing active etc. now those quirky sims can be anything from a klepto to a pyro. These personalities dominate the way sims think, socialize, and spend their days.
  • Lifetime Wants: These were put in the earlier Sims 2 expansions giving the sims a real goal in life. Originally they were randomly given based on personality but now you get to pick them. Your artistic bookworm can dream of excelling in both writing and painting.
  • Object Placement: We are no longer restricted to a square system of placing objects. You don’t need an entire end table just for a tiny alarm clock. Objects can also be placed on a slant creating very realistic sitting areas.
  • Neighbrohood Unity: You can now zoom out and see your entire town, as well as visit your friends. The townies now grow up just like your main household. Your childhood schoolmate might be a future co-worker! You can also have one family member at the spa, while the other is at the library, and another one is at home.
  • Mood: Moodlets are genius…now a sim can truely appreciate the world around him. From a park to a library to a beachside villa the sim gets a boost. Now sims can get happy from eating a good meal and sad from having a bad party. It replaces memory quite well because it directly impacts the sims’ lives.
  • Little Things: Improvements to gameplay such as choosing a time and a dresscode for a party, ability to move the mailbox and garbage can to other parts of the lot, oppurtunities instead of senarios based on chance

Inspiration

I haven’t written in 19 days…wow…time to fix that…I’ve been having a hard time finding a reason to write for quite a few reasons:

  1. Finals and end of school
  2. Writers block
  3. I was lazy
  4. The Sims 3

So I’m going to talk about what inspired me to come back…aside from my 0 tumblarity. It was actually Nick News which was on a few hours ago, and it talked about children expressing themselves on the internet. It included people like Fred who are extremely popular for their internet expressions. I’m not expecting to become as popular as they are but it wouldn’t hurt to try. I may not be the next great internet sensation but I feel better already just from writing for a few minutes.

Procrastination…all nighters…etc.

So right now its 3am…and I just finished my english takehome final due in 5 hours. But why did I do this to myself! I had a week for this assignment…but really…im not gonna do it unless i do it all in one night…so whats the point of doing it in advance? tonight was hell but its done…and im done…so like tomorrow I am going to feel great that I finished on time and spent a fraction of the time most people spent. Ok im like unable to type comprehendable sentences now so this will be a short entry but the reason I procrastinate is because im going to do it all at once anyway…

Reviews

So I already deeply expressed my opinion on critics, but I want to talk about reviewers on amazon etc. who rate products. I am awaiting my copy of The Sims 3 in the mail and have been reading reviews out of desperate excitement to try this game. The first places I checked were well known gaming sites. I was very excited to see that Sims 3 got generally above average reviews. After I ran out of gaming sites I looked at amazon hoping for a good personal review of the game but alas I found something quite different. If this blog hasn’t entirely convinced you, ANYONE can say what they want on the internet! Sims 3 received a 2.5star rating obviously because of the massive differences of opinion. The reviewers mainly complained of crashing and bugs, but most of them probably were too busy to make sure their computer fit the minimum requirements (ITS NOT LIKE THIS GAME TOOK FOREVER TO COME OUT) but I digress. The reason professional reviews are much better is because of their attention to the general public vs. individual annoyances. I am not against people reviewing products online. After all it makes my life easier as a buyer, but people need to follow the 5 rules of reviewing:

1. Don’t say what has been said: Read a review before you write one…it helps no one to have to sift through 300 reviews when considering a product.

2. Think before you type: I have a good angry rant when I write once in a while but really people need to think to themselves whether they are just pissed off at their game not working or have something important to say. Usually if people want to review something they want to complain about it…

3. Write as seriously as you wish to be taken: Bad grammar is everywhere…especially here, but there are many ways for you to get your point across clearly and properly without sounding ignorant.

4. This is kind of a given but make sure your reviewing the right product: You laugh, but that does happen…and it isn’t pretty

5. WHY: I don’t think anyone cares that you decided to sell your copy of Sims 3 on ebay…but please tell us WHY…and whatever you do don’t sell your copy of Sims 3 on ebay after only reading the reviews on amazon

As a buyer you can take very few reviews on a website like amazon seriously, however there are some smart people out there and these reviews should not completely be discouraged. I had already bought the game then started to read reviews, and use themĀ  to find out a little bit of USEFUL information and for a good laugh.
